It was still quiet early this morning, as it has been for the last few months, in the new Edward A. Brennan Entry Pavilion at Rush University Medical Center. But for the first time, sliding glass doors opened on cue as patients began filing through the main entrance to Rush’s new hospital, which officially opened today. And for the first time, a guest relations representative — Kasey Bates — was on duty behind the information desk, welcoming patients into the Tower and helping them find their way.

Chaplains, clinicians, administrators, other employees and news crews gathered with eager eyes, ears and cameras Friday morning for the dedication of the new emergency department (ED). Each person held a stone distributed by department chaplains, representing their personal experiences at the former Rush University Medical Center ED, part of which was housed in the oldest building on the Rush campus – called the Jones building, which was constructed in 1888. There was a feeling of unity, excitement and pride among the crowd as several of the chaplains shared blessings and prayers.
