A new study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found that indoor tanning beds sharply increase the risk of melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer. That’s a good reason to avoid tanning beds, which are classified by the World Health Organization as a human carcinogen. Caught early, melanoma is curable, but in its advanced stages, the disease is at present almost unstoppable. There are promising treatments on the horizon, though. Dr. Howard Kaufman, director of the Rush Cancer Program, is leading a nationwide clinical trial testing a vaccine that has so far shown remarkably positive results.
